CCTV Across The Straight - Virtual Backdrops

For China Central Television’s late night news programme Across The Strait, Lightwell was commissioned to create a pair of large scale animated backdrop loops for studios in Beijing and Taipei. The programme focuses on Taiwan related current affairs, requiring an atmosphere that felt authoritative, contemporary and quietly dramatic.

The Beijing studio installation spanned two sides of the set with expansive LED walls, forming an immersive architectural canvas. In Taipei, a single large LED screen sat behind guests who appeared remotely in the Beijing studio, creating a visual dialogue between the two cities. Though physically separate, the environments needed to feel conceptually connected.

Both backdrops were conceived as cinematic night scenes. We constructed each environment from a curated mosaic of city photography, carefully composited into cohesive urban panoramas. From there, we enhanced the imagery with nuanced lighting design, animated details and fully replaced skies that added movement without distraction. Subtle light transitions and ambient motion ensured the loops felt alive while remaining editorially respectful.

To introduce depth, we layered sparse interior architectural elements into the mid ground. These structures framed the skyline compositions and provided dimensional separation between presenter and backdrop. The Beijing environment drew particular inspiration from the bold geometry and spatial rhythm of the CCTV headquarters, echoing its architectural language without replicating it directly.

The result was a pair of sophisticated, atmospheric digital stages that anchored the broadcast visually, reinforcing the programme’s cross strait perspective through light, scale and motion.
