ABC Breakfast Digital Backdrops: A Cleaner Look for Melbourne

This is Lightwell's third major backdrop design for ABC Breakfast since 2014 - a relationship built on successive commissions that has evolved alongside both the programme and the city it calls home.

The Brief
The 2026 update was driven by three converging needs: Melbourne's skyline had changed significantly since our previous design in 2020, with new buildings requiring an updated cityscape; ABC's brand colours had been refreshed and the studio needed to align with them; and there was a clear desire for a fresher, cleaner aesthetic overall.

The new design is defined by an azure blue sky gradient - a deliberate departure from the warmer, more saturated palette of previous iterations. Complementing and contrasting with that blue, orange lightboxes and light details drawn directly from the ABC Breakfast brand palette bring warmth and energy to the composition without compromising the clarity of the new look.

The Design
The Melbourne cityscape appears behind a stylised architectural interior, designed to create depth, incorporate reflection effects, and provide a structured compositional framework for each presenting position. The architecture gives the digital environment coherence and credibility - the cityscape is not simply placed behind the presenters, but viewed through and within a space that has its own material logic.

The studio features two distinct presenting positions. The news desk is backed by a large format LED screen, flanked by lightboxes displaying printed artwork also delivered by Lightwell. The sofa position is anchored by a central LED screen with two smaller flanking screens, creating a wider, more immersive backdrop suited to the relaxed register of that part of the programme.

The Result
A crisp, contemporary studio environment that brings ABC Breakfast's visual identity up to date - grounded in Melbourne, aligned with the refreshed brand, and designed to remain credible for years to come.
