Sky Sports News - Extensive Backdrop Extensions Create The Illusion Of An Expansive HQ

In 2011, we were commissioned to create a set of digital backdrop extensions for the Sky Sports News studio. The studio perimeter was lined with lightboxes, and our task was to design an architectural environment that would integrate seamlessly with these illuminated surfaces.

Drawing on our architectural background, we developed a crisp, modern interior that reflected the Sky Sports brand and visual identity. The design was conceived to feel like a real, continuous space surrounding the presenters, while complementing the existing physical set elements.

To achieve the illusion of a larger environment, we employed Lightwell’s unique approach to trompe l’oeil design. This modern interpretation of the technique creates convincing three-dimensional effects that extend the perceived space far beyond the studio’s physical footprint. By carefully controlling perspective, lighting, and surface detail, we ensured the virtual architecture blended seamlessly with live camera shots, maintaining the illusion from multiple angles.

The result was a visually cohesive and immersive set environment that expanded the sense of space without requiring structural changes to the studio. This project demonstrated how our distinctive trompe l’oeil methods can deliver cost-effective, flexible backdrop solutions that enhance broadcast presentation while preserving brand identity.
